Introducing a New Revenue Stream with SLM’s Insert Media Program

“We always have the customer’s interest in mind, so the package insert program has been a really neat way to introduce them to new and innovative brands/categories that we currently do not offer at Grove.”

Results

There has been a steady growth of the program, with insert placements for each month selling out over an 18-month period. As of Q3 2024, SLM brought in over $1MM dollars in new revenue for Grove and partnered with over 30 premium brands, all with minimal lift from the Grove team. We’ve since increased the number of partner inserts going into each box to three at a time, allowing more top brands to test and scale this program.

Overview

Grove Collaborative, a certified B corp, aims to make it easier for consumers to access sustainable, planet-friendly products, focusing on categories like cleaning supplies, personal care, baby products, and wellness items. Their main focus as a DTC company is generating new revenue.

The Problem

Grove came to SLM looking for a way to monetize their outgoing shipments with inserts from non-competitive brands in order to offset shipping costs and add a new revenue stream. Grove had already successfully tested and scaled the Insert Media channel for prospecting by placing their inserts into other third-party shipments with high brand and customer affinities.

Our Solution

SLM recommended that Grove start small by partnering with one brand at a time to buy out the full order volume each month. This allowed SLM to precisely iron out the monetization process (sales/marketing, production, freighting, distribution, data analysis, etc.), all while drumming up new demand and interest in the program. SLM’s expertise and a large network of existing clients made it easy for like-minded partners to get excited about testing into Grove shipments for their prospecting initiatives.
